UN Warns: “Almost a Third of Gaza Residents Go Days Without Food

Special Report – July 26, 2025

"Malnutrition is surging with 90,000 women and children in urgent need of treatment."
World Food Programme (WFP)

Gaza – The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached alarming levels. The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that nearly one-third of Gaza’s population is enduring multiple days without food, with malnutrition soaring among the most vulnerable groups.

According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, nine more people died from malnutrition on Friday, bringing the death toll from hunger since the war began to 122 people.

Israel’s Control and Aid Blockade

Despite Israeli claims that it is not blocking humanitarian aid, the reality on the ground tells a different story. International agencies report that Israeli restrictions and military operations have severely hindered the delivery of food, medicine, and fuel.

Western Governments Speak Out

The United Kingdom, France, and Germany issued a joint statement on Friday demanding that Israel "immediately lift restrictions on the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza." The leaders described the situation as a “humanitarian catastrophe” and reminded Israel of its obligations under international humanitarian law.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said his government is willing to assist with airdropping aid into Gaza, although aid agencies have questioned the efficiency and safety of such methods. He also confirmed that the UK is working to urgently evacuate critically ill Palestinian children for treatment in British hospitals.

Meanwhile, France has announced it will officially recognize the State of Palestine in September, a move condemned by Israel and the U.S. Over one-third of UK MPs have signed a letter urging Britain to do the same, though Starmer said it must be part of a comprehensive two-state solution.

Eyewitness: Aid Sites Turned into War Zones

Anthony Aguilar, a U.S. security contractor who worked with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in May and June, told the BBC that he "witnessed war crimes" committed by Israeli forces and U.S. contractors. He described live ammunition, artillery, and tank fire being used against civilians at food distribution points.

"In my entire military career, I’ve never seen such brutality and indiscriminate violence against civilians."

The GHF dismissed his claims as "categorically false" and accused him of being a “disgruntled former employee” fired for misconduct.

A Collapsing Ceasefire and a Shattered Land

The war, triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, has now led to the deaths of over 59,000 people in Gaza, according to local authorities. The two-month ceasefire that collapsed in March 2025 was followed by Israel resuming its military offensive and imposing a full blockade that lasted nearly two months.

Even after some restrictions were eased, food and medical shortages have worsened. More than 90% of homes in Gaza are believed to be damaged or destroyed, and the population has been displaced multiple times.

Final Words

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres put it:

“I cannot explain the level of indifference and inaction by so many in the international community – the lack of compassion, the lack of truth, the lack of humanity.”

If the global community fails to act decisively, the suffering in Gaza may become one of the darkest chapters in modern humanitarian history.
